Windy City Baker Around the World: Honeymoon Series – The Beginning

My husband, Nabil, and I got married back on September 15, 2018. It was a beautiful September Saturday in the Chicagoland area. We were lucky enough to have all of our friends and family present to share in our happy day.

Choosing the location

After the wedding, we delayed our honeymoon about 1 year to save money for an amazing trip.  Since my husband and I are obsessed with food, our goal was to honeymoon in a place with exquisite cuisine.

We’d narrowed down our choices to either Southeast Asia (I absolutely LOVE Asian food) or France (i.e., arguably the best place for pastries in the entire world).  Since we were lucky enough to be gifted with multiple days at a resort outside of Paris, France (thank you Mom and Dad!), we settled on a two-week vacation around France.

There were so many cities, restaurants, and bakeries we wanted to visit in France.  My husband spent a long time researching and making our itinerary for the trip.  We decided to start our vacation in Nice and work our way to Paris through Marseille, the Alps, and Lyon.

We booked rooms in Nice for 2 nights, Marseille for 3 nights, Lyon for 4 nights, and Paris for 6 nights.

To have the most flexibility while traveling, we decided to rent a car and drive for the entire trip.  It was an incredible experience to drive through the French countryside!

This was definitely going to be a whirlwind trip with visiting 4 major French cities in 2 weeks, but we wanted to experience a variety of French culture and gain a general understanding of the regional flavors in each location.

Our primary focus on this trip was definitely on food (both savory and sweet), although we did do some touristy sight-seeing along the way.

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to write about our honeymoon adventures (while also including some of the trials and tribulations).  With each part of the trip, I’ll discuss the places we went, the delicious food we ate (primarily focusing on the baked goods), and then I’ll also try to share my own recipe of a favorite baked good from that region.
